epicmarketing,
I'm sorry to say that we don't have another grid option in place yet. All of our developer resources have been going toward the creation of SpyFu Recon Files. To my knowledge, chrome still comes preinstalled with gears on it. Also, firefox, IE, and safari 32 bit should install gears fine. Also, we try to provide a direct CSV export as an alternative to using our gears grid for most major lists.

To provide some explanation ... Recon Files are white labelable reports on domains. Specifically we're starting with SEO reports. A trailier is here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6bXtQivdCI. The beta sign up is here, http://www.spyfu.com/recon/

I will pass your feedback along. While I don't know our next project for certain, I assume once the Beta of recon gets going in the next new months that we will turn our attention to removing gears from our site.

This will be an additional service, separate from SpyFu. The entire pricing model will be different. You would pay on a per report basis, where SpyFu allows for unlimited searches on any domain. The reason being that a single report requires multiple hours of crunching on one of our new servers.

But that is for when we come out of Beta, and we're still collecting e-mails to get our Beta started. At first we'll just be looking for feedback. So you will get a few reports for free. From there we will release a new type of report every month or so for you to try out.

In case anyone reads this and wants to know what we're talking about, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6bXtQivdCI

I'm not sure if I can post the actual recon beta sign up link yet or not. I'll check into that.
Topic: How to determine realistic traffic in a local business?
Posted: Friday, July 09, 2010 8:05:46 AM
I assume you mean you are trying to track a competitor's ROI? Or maybe you mean that you are trying to use your own domain to verify that the information on our site is legit. For your own ROI you would want to use your own server side tracking or a tool like Google Analytics.

As for how we compute traffic and search volume:
- first we determine all the keywords a domain is ranking on (the secret sauce of all of SpyFu)
- then, using stats ultimately provided by Google itself we can roll up the search volume and clicks/day for each keyword to get an estimate for the entire domain. For organic keywords we take rank into consideration to estimate clicks from the search volume. For paid keywords Google has a click/day estimate already.

We don't do anything differently for local businesses. But if your ads are geotargetted, then there may be gaps in our data, at least for some time. We use a mix of IP addresses across the country, so we may pick up LA local ads one month for keyword X and NY ads the next month. So that is an important thing to keep in mind if you're a local business.
Topic: Smartsearch - Saving Selected to CSV
Posted: Thursday, June 17, 2010 8:46:44 AM
No, you aren't missing anything. Those are all accurate.

For the CSV/XLS export if you filter the rows via the include/exclude filter first, then only the filtered rows will be exported, but it ignores the check boxes.

I apologize for the shortcoming in functionality. You'll have to export everything to excel and then filter from there.
Topic: Trusting the numbers - This forum

The numbers are accurate I think, but the problem is that our forums are much less active than they were in the earlier years of SpyFu.

At the bottom of the page you'll see a drop down that is set at "The last six months". If you change that you can see older posts. I was confused by the lack of posts at first as well.

While we still check the forums regularly, their activity has fallen off thanks to our livechat that we know have on the site for members. You should find a link for it on the footer of most pages (not the forums themselves though).

You should check out http://university.spyfu.com/. This is where we've been putting all our efforts to better document the site.
Topic: Subdomains to work in Kombat
Posted: Monday, May 10, 2010 7:38:06 AM
point taken. This would help for larger domains. Right now Kombat doesn't handle enormous overlaps too well when it comes to exporting.

In the mean time just remember if there is a list you want and you can't get it you can e-mail support@spyfu.com.

I'll make sure our development team sees this suggestions.

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for the suggestion. I think that should be a doable thing to add in.

I'm forwarding this post to the rest of SpyFu to see if we can work it in or not.
Topic: Run Date in reports
Posted: Wednesday, April 14, 2010 11:51:22 AM
Run date is the last month that we found an ad for that keyword. So the older the run date the older the ad.

So for right now a run date of 20100301 would be the most recent, since we published our march data at the start of april.

We do keep historic ads for awhile so filtering by this may help a lot.
Topic: Missing Feature?
Posted: Wednesday, March 31, 2010 7:31:47 AM
I'm not sure what would have supplied just those two columns.

You'll notice now on the site you have the main Domain page which shows all organic results we've found for the entire domain recently. Then there is also Host pages linked to from there. These break down the organic results by host. We also used to go further and break host into path and path into url. But we took those features off of the site a long time ago because they were very rarely used. Maybe that is what you were looking at.

To clarify what I'm talking about, here is the Domain page for nike.com, http://www.spyfu.com/Domain.aspx?d=1378982560482675093. And then here is a Host page for store.nike.com, http://www.spyfu.com/Host.aspx?h=5748095239018212039. But from there you can't get to store.nike.com/xyz or store.nike.com/xyv/Default.aspx. We just don't have that granularity anymore.

Avere,
It should work on snow leopard if you use the 32 bit version of safari. I think you were running into a bottle neck we experienced yesterday with Keyword SmartSearch. It should be all caught up now.
