Any thoughts out there as to why two similar domain names that are owned by the same party but used for different purposes would have negative effects on one or both of the sites?

For example:

Domain.COM - used for recruiting
Domain.NET - used for product information

I know the situation would create confusion for consumers. What are the SEO effects?

Thanks in advance for your help!

What do you mean by "negative effects" and how do you know one has a negative effect on the other?
